About St. Croix:
In its own inimitable style, St. Croix combines all the best of the Virgin Islands. More laid back than St. Thomas, a few paces faster than St. John, the island called "the quiet virgin" also has the amenities and the beauty. While St. Croix has its share of shopping centers and businesses, less development has led to an atmosphere that's more town and country. The island is large enough to go for an afternoon drive without traveling the same road twice. It is blessed with abundant picturesque architecture from the sugar plantation days and much of that architecture is incorporated into the newer buildings. The rural surroundings offer natural settings that can be breathtaking.

The island has cosmopolitan Christiansted and the uniqueness of Frederiksted. St. Croix has the Island center for the Performing Arts for concerts, superb restaurants, and charming boutiques. The sparkling blue waters and white clean beaches make sailing, wind surfing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and just enjoying the sunsets a Crucian pastime. St. Croix is an island of sports-minded people and family-oriented outdoor types. There are three golf courses, one a world-class ranked course, numerous tennis courts, hiking or horseback riding in the rain forest. You can visit the Aquarium, Botanical Gardens, Whim museum, take an island tour or a nature walk. Visit Fort Christiansvaern or Fort Frederik or just take a walk around the water front docks and enjoy the entertainment. If your pleasure is just pure tropical relaxation you have chosen the right place. St. Croix is one of the top four most romantic places to vacation!.....top.

...a bed & breakfast in a historic town house.
Enjoy breakfast while surveying the daily arrival of the cruise ships, or sip a cocktail from the honor bar as the sunset casts a rosy glow on the old town of Charlotte Amalie.

The Crystal Palace is located in Dronningens Quarter in the heart of St. Thomas' Historic district. She is surrounded by a dozen other colonial mansions - hearty survivors of the Golden Age of St. Thomas, when the merchant barons of the islands built their elaborate homes on Synagogue Hill.

Old Glory:
Look up from Crystal Gade and you'll see this fine old double-breasted colonial mansion. The Crystal Palace, the Lockhart family home, was originally built in the 1830's and has survived natural disasters and fires.
In the beginning, the Crystal Palace was built to be fitted with glass casement windows. Hence, the name of the house, and the street she so elegantly dominates.
The great room of The Crystal Palace is a dramatic frame for the spectacular view from the enclosed gallery. Eclectic mahogany and fruit wood furniture spans the ages, from please-don't-sit antiques to 1960s & 70s pieces and everything in between.
The house is a treasure trove of traditional West Indian architectural details: tray ceilings, wrought iron gates, hardwood floors, chandeliers and Morocco tiles. Selected paintings from the Lockhart collection of period and contemporary island art complete the decor.

Rooms:
A massive interior staircase leads down to four large guest rooms. Furnishings are simple, clean and comfortable. Three rooms with twin beds share a bath and the fourth has a double bed and an enormous tiled bath ensuite.
There is a communal area in the hall between the quest rooms with a small fridge and microwave for preparing light snacks.

Location:
The Crystal Palace is located just steps away from the luxury duty free shops of Main Street. There are plenty of easy historic walks in the immediate neighborhood. Several restaurants in the area range from local, inexpensive fare to world class cuisine.
You can call or find a taxi transportation to the beaches, island attractions and sport venues. Your host, Ronnie Lockhart is usually available to suggest local events and to help you plan your day with interesting excursions.

The Experience:
Admittedly, The Crystal Palace is not for everyone. But if you are a true traveller, one who values experience over amenities, one who yearns to become a part of the places you visit then you will be delighted with your stay in this fine old mansion.

Beaches

BREWER'S BEACH. On Route 30 near the airport, Brewer's Beach is a long stretch of powdery white sand. Trucks that sell lunch, snacks, and drinks often park along the road bordering the beach.

COKI BEACH. Next to Coral World (turn north off Route 38), this is a popular snorkeling spot for cruise-ship passengers, and also a good place to dash in for a swim or just to do some people-watching. Don't leave valuables unattended in your car or on the beach.

HULL BAY. On the north shore (Route 37), this beach faces Inner and Outer Brass cays and attracts fishermen and beachcombers. With its rough Atlantic surf and relative isolation, Hull Bay is one of the island's best surfing spots.

MAGENS BAY. On Route 35, Magens Bay is usually lively because of its spectacular crescent of white sand and its calm waters. It's often listed among the world's most beautiful beaches. The bottom is flat and sandy, so this is a place for sunning and swimming rather than snorkeling. You'll find a bar, bathhouses, a nature trail, and a snack bar.

MORNING STAR BEACH. Close to Charlotte Amalie and fronting the Marriott Frenchman's Reef Hotel, this pretty curve of beach is where many young locals bodysurf or play volleyball. Snorkeling is good near the rocks when the current doesn't affect visibility.

SAPPHIRE BEACH. Here you'll find a fine view of St. John and other islands. The snorkeling is excellent at the reef to the right or east, near Pettyklip Point, and the Sapphire Beach Resort rents water-sports gear.

SECRET HARBOUR. The condo resort here doesn't at all detract from the attractiveness of the covelike beach. Not only is this east end spot pretty, it also has superb snorkeling -- head out to the left, near the rocks.

Boating and Sailing
Calm seas, crystal waters, and close-by islands make St. Thomas a favorite jumping-off spot for day- or weeklong sails or powerboat adventures. With well over 100 vessels from which to choose, St. Thomas is the charter-boat mecca of the USVI. You can go through a broker to book a sailing vessel with a crew or contact a charter company directly.

Fishing

FISHING. Fishing here is synonymous with blue marlin angling -- especially from June through October. Four 1,000-pound-plus blues, including three world records, have been caught on the famous North Drop, about 20 mi north of St. Thomas. To book a boat, contact the American Yacht Harbor (6100 Red Hook Plaza, PHONE: 340/775-6454), Charter Boat Center (6300 Red Hook Plaza, PHONE: 340/775-7990 or 800/866-5714), or Sapphire Beach Marina (Sapphire Bay, PHONE: 340/775-6100). Or to find the trip that will best suit you, walk down the docks at either American Yacht Harbor or Sapphire Beach Marina and chat with the captains.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
Dive sites feature wrecks such as the Cartanser Sr., and the General Rogers,. Reef dives offer hidden caves and archways at Cow and Calf Rocks, coral-covered pinnacles at Frenchcap, and tunnels where you can explore undersea from the Caribbean to the Atlantic at Thatch Cay, Grass Cay, and Congo Cay. There are plenty of snorkeling possibilities, too. Nick Aquilar's At-A-Glance Snorkeller's Guide To St. Thomas, available at local souvenir shops, describes 15 idyllic spots in detail.

AQUA ACTION. This full-service, PADI five-star shop offers all levels of instruction at Secret Harbour Beach Resort. 6501 Red Hook Plaza, PHONE: 340/775-6285 or 800/775-6285.
